Fire Prevention Week

In 1920, President Woodrow Wilson issued the first National Fire Prevention Day proclamation, and since 1922, National Fire Prevention Week has been observed on the Sunday-through-Saturday period in which October 9 falls. In addition, the President of the United States has signed a proclamation pronouncing a national observance during that week every year since 1925.

Smoke Detectors

Smoke detectors save lives, but only if they are installed and working. The majority of fatality fires occur in homes without working smoke alarms.

The Sherman Fire Department recommends that you install at least one smoke detector on every level of your home. Be sure your smoke detectors are near bedrooms and other sleeping areas in your home. Battery-operated alarms should be tested once a month to make certain they are working.

Replace the batteries in your smoke alarm at least once a year. The Sherman Fire Department recommends you do this when you change your clocks to Daylight Savings Time each fall.

The Sherman Fire Department's smoke detector program offers free smoke alarms and free battery replacement to residents. The smoke detectors and batteries are installed by on-duty firefighters at no cost to the resident. Contact the Fire Marshal or call (903) 892-7267 for more information on this service.

New smoke detectors and batteries are accepted to help fund this life-saving program. If you or your organization would like to make a donation to our program, please call us at (903) 892-7267 or contact the Fire Marshal.

Smoke Detectors in Rental Property

How many people reading this article are renting an apartment, house or mobile home? How many of you know someone who is renting property? Did you know that by law the rental property must have working smoke detectors? The International Fire Code (adopted by the City of Sherman) states that residential structures rented to the public must have a working fire detection system or at least a battery operated smoke detector. According to the International Fire Code, section 907.2.10, single-or multiple-station smoke alarms shall be installed and maintained in Residential Groups R-2, R3, and R-4. This includes single family residences, mobile homes and apartments that are rented to the public.

Sherman has had numerous fires involving rental property that was unprotected by any kind of alarm system. It is the responsibility of the property owner to supply working detectors or detection systems in all residential property rented by the public. If you are aware of any rental property that does not have working smoke detectors, you should contact the Sherman Fire Marshal’s office at 903-892-7267 or by e-mail. If the owner is unable to supply those detectors, the Sherman Fire Department will be glad to supply one at no charge. It is our desire to have working smoke detectors in all homes in the Sherman area.

Juvenile Firesetters

This program identifies first time firesetters in our community. In an effort to keep first time firesetters out of the legal system, we provide counseling and training for youths that have been found to have a general curiosity with fire. The goal is to educate the child and make him aware of the dangers from his attempts at playing with fire.

For more information on this program, call (903) 892-7343 or contact the Fire Marshal.
